Hi folks
I am using the above version 1.6.0.30 and on OS Win XP Pro.  Spybot is taking 6 hours to carry out a scan.
 Is this normal?  Alternatively is there another programme that does the same thing but faster?

Wow that seems slow, download Malwarebytes install, update then run a scan.

Sorry to hijack your post, but can I ask whether it is necessary to turn off any antivirus/firewall when downloading the  malawarebytes program?

No you shouldn't need to turn off Av or firewall, it should download and install without any problems at all.
