I have started getting a balloon in the Taskbar when I boot up which says I have no firewall connected and my computer is at risk and to click on the balloon.
Clicking on the balloon takes you to the Windows Security Centre which shows the Windows Firewall in red, says its not connected and directs you to an enabling link. I did that, it said it was now enabled and went green.
The problem is that every time I boot up it's back and I keep doing it.
Has anyone any ideas?
I think it must have arrived from a Microsoft download as I have not come across it before.

The windows firewall is built into XP and Vista ....
What anti-virus are you running ??
If you have a commercial firewall already it might be it turning windows firewall off.

Thanks Jim It is my understanding that Windows firewall has always been built into XP and Vista. Mine is XP SP3. I have always run Avast anti-virus successfully without any problems. The only thing I have done differently recently is some Microsoft downloads. pinkcloud

Thanks oldyella but I don't want Zone Alarm. I would just like to get rid of this error balloon that keeps coming up from the Windows Firewall. pinkcloud

Click Start then RUN type: control admintools then click OK,Double click the "Services" shortcut then scroll to "DCOM Server Process Launcher" it should be set to Start and Automatic, if it isn't right click on it and set it to Automatic then click Apply, do the same with "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" it should also be be at Start and Automatic. Now reboot and they should switch on, then try setting the Windows Firewall.
If it doesn't work scan your system for infections.

Thanks Neon They were both set to Start and Automatic and I have done loads of scans. Any other ideas please? I am still looking. pinkcloud

Thanks neon I don't think it's a Trojan or the like. Since I had one about a year ago I've run several different manual scans a day as well as Avast 24/7 and never found anything. Serves me right for just thinking how well my PCs have been performing for so long. I believe all of this clutch of current issues is a result of installing the HP Photosmart C6380 All in one. There were apparently known issues with firewalls, anti virus software, printer errors etc but HP me told they were supposed to have been fixed by the new drivers I downloaded. All of the issues have gone now except this Windows firewall balloon and if this persists I will talk to HP again. Thanks again pinkcloud
