The definitive answer to stopping Windows Messenger from loading on startup

Okay, to stop Window Messenger from running at Startup, you need to do the following steps (as that Messenger entry in "services.msc" doesn't relate to windows messenger at all): 1.>    Go to Start -> Run > 2. Type in gpedit.msc  >3. Go into User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Messenger  > 4. Set the values to "Enabled" (Windows Default is "Not Configured") This will stop Windows Messenger from running at all, even at Startup.

If you prefer to remove Windows Messenger manually, click Start, Run and enter the following command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

I prefer Windows Live Messenger so I remove the windows messenger embedded in XP this way.

Windows Messenger is just the basic MSN Messenger that came with XP ...

Live Messenger is the one that has more than 8 years development and does a whole lot more ..

No you don't loose contacts .... you have it set up with Hotmail I would think? ....

What you could do is put Live messenger on and try it first and then delete the windows messenger when you are happy with what you have.

Most of my communication with Thailand it with VOIP and MyNetFone ..... My wife's family don't own computers.
