Hi
each time I start up, I have to reset the screen resolutions.
I do the normal things 'properties settings put up 16.
then apply,then ok and all is well until the next time.
I,m running  windows xp.
help if possible   alan

Boot Windows into Safe Mode, right-click the Desktop, and click Properties. Click Settings and move the Resolution slider to the left until it reaches a setting your monitor and video card can handle. You need to look at the documentation for those devices to see what those settings are, but 640 x 480 is always safe if you want to troubleshoot from there.

Click the Advanced button and choose the Adapter tab. Click the drop-down arrow and select a refresh rate of 60Hz (which is always safe) or a refresh rate that both your monitor and video card support. Choose Optimal if you don't see any numbers on the box. If don't have the box at all, click the List All Modes button and make a valid selection there before clicking OK. Click Apply and reboot your PC to see if the changes fix the problem.

When determining a valid resolution and refresh rate for your monitor, make sure the values correspond to the color bit depth you use (either 16-bit or 32-bit). Selecting 32-bit color requires quite a bit more video memory than 16-bit color, so in general the available refresh rates and resolutions are lower when you use 32-bit color.

A further point
The symptoms you describe are often indicative of a video driver incorrectly or not installed.
To install a video driver go to the manufacturers web site and find the latest or most appropriate driver for your system
Note any instructions. Generally you download and save the driver file to a folder of choice
Then remove the current driver and then install the downloaded one.
Set the resolution etc as appropriate
