I  have an external hard drive "Drive H"
I am trying to open it but it is telling me that it is corrupted
I want to open it to clean it  up and take off  any unwanted files etc I saved  a lot  of files to it till I had this new computer set up but not enouggh to fill it up
On looking at  the space it seems that it is full
When I connected it to my new computer it had heaps  of room (I have not saved anything to  it in since I got this new computer that I am aware of  )
The problem is I cant read what is on it
There are a few files on there I want to keep
I  can re format but that will wipe  everything off
Can anyone asvise me on how  I can open it up and clean it up so I can save any new files, should it be connected to the computer at all times or should it be only connected when I need to save stuff?.
I have tried to run a virus scan over it but that too will not  work
Thanks

That brand is it and does it have to have power plugged to it ?

You might have better luck taking the hard drive out of the case and installing it in your computer as a slave ... or even if you have another computer working ...

It may allow you to extract the data you need before you reformat it ...

A bit techie for me I am afraid
Do you mean I have to unscrew the external hard drive box and put it in my computer hard drive
That will be a bit hard as I have an all in one computer with in built hard drive in the back of the screen somewhere
A bit scary for  me
I thought there may be another way

You may need to have a Techie look at it then as I don't see you being able to recover data through the USB post ...

It sounds to me the Volume Geometry of the hard drive is corrupt and I think you will need to have a data recovery program run on it then recreate the partition to straighten it out.

I don't think you will find a simple fix.

Thanks Jimbob
I thought that too
May just reformat and forget  what  is on it and start again I assume it will be  ok to use once reformmatted?
Thanks for trying
