I do not know anything about tables.

Using Word with an existing table and selecting Table > Insert > Rows Below I can insert only one row.

Can somebody please tell me how to insert several rows at once.

This may assist,,, From another forum..

It's unfortunate that Word doesn't have a dialog that allows you to specify
the number of rows to add in the same way that you can specify how many rows
you want when you initially create a table, but there are ways to streamline
the process.

The first thing you need to know is that when you choose Insert Rows, Word
will add the number of rows you have selected. So if you select two rows, it
will add two rows. You can use this to your advantage even if you start by
adding a single row. Select a row, right-click, choose Insert Rows. Then
select the new row along with the one you originally selected and press F4
(repeat). This will give you two new rows. Add those to the selection (four
rows selected) and press F4 again. Select the eight rows and F4. And so on.

If your table is a very simple one (you haven't changed the default width of
the columns or done anything fancy with borders), there is an even quicker
way. Using Table | Insert | Table or the Insert Table toolbar button, create
a new table with the desired number of rows below your existing table, then
delete the empty paragraph between them to join the tables. If the
additional rows need to go in the middle of the table, you can (with some
trial and error) drag or copy/paste them there.

pinkcloud,
press F1 in Word, type in "Insert or create a table", up will come a Window on how to create a Table, how to convert
Text to Table etc.etc.
Open Word Click Insert-----click Table----Type in the Dialogbox the Numbers of Rows, and Columns and Ok out.
When you start typing into the first Column ,and first Row, you will find it will expand down to fit your Text,
to select another Column, and Row to type into, just press your Tab Key.

try this,
open Word --go to View, select "Taks Pane", when it opens type into Search, "adding Rows to an existing Table", wait for Answer.
Word would have the best, and comprehensive Help System of all. I get a nearly 2 Pages of Instructions on that Question, when I typed it in just then.
Btw. if you press F1, and nothing happens there is something wrong?

Thanks Jutta.

When I selected “Task Pane” in Word as you suggested no further search boxes opened only the one already there in Word.  Searching there gives nothing about adding multiple rows to an existing table only how to insert one extra row.

I am using XP SP3 and Microsoft Office XP Professional 2002.

"pinkcloud,
If you "right" click in any Row, you wanted to add a Row too, a dropdown Menu opens, click on "Insert Row above, or below".
