Why cant I copy and paste in word doc or emails

I have win 7 and using Microsoft Outlook with Office 2007
I am having trouble copying and pasting in word, the internet, and email documents
I get a little hand and it will not highlight so I can paste into another document
I have tried changing the pointer but it did not work
Is there something else that I can do must have done something as this has been going on for a few months now and it is getting very annoying
thanks for any help
