Hi
I.ve come here in desperation.I have been playing with ubuntu and in fact have installed ubuntu 11.04 on two desktops using both live cd and usb sticks alongside xp
I made the cd,s with infrarecorder and the stick with universal from pendrivelinux.com
Now I come to the laptop
Downloaded ubuntu 11.04 on to the laptop
Dowloaded infrarecorder on to the laptop
Dowloaded usb universal installer
made both a cd and usb stick
My laptop has a option at startup to press "esc" to open a boot option screen to select a boot drive
So i first booted with cd and was invited to install ubuntu it went through all the script and displayed a sort of grey screen with fine coloured vertical lines (turn off restart)
then booted with usb same result
I have spent days prowling around ubuntu forums and while there are plenty of people to tell me how to do it I cant find anyone who has had a similar prob with a laptop
by the way it is a asus A6R
I am in "dicussions" as it is not a computer problem just a frustration
I,m on the desktop now doing this in ubuntu so I dont feel a total dill
Your thoughts would be appreciated
Cheers Mike

Are you trying to boot from the USB/CD? then you need to press F2 at bootup up and then change the boot order to the CD rom or the USB as it maybe the hard drive that is set to boot by default.

Neon
Thanks
Yes I went into the bios  (f2) and changed the boot order to cd/dvd as you are correct it does default to hdd. also if i press esc at startup I get a further oppotunity to set boot order as I get a mini version of the bios showing only the boot order I can scrole the up /down arrow to select either hdd, cd/dvd,or usb stick if it is inserted by so doing I was able to try both the cd and usb
The fact that I,m getting the ubuntu splash screen followed by scrolling text indicates I,m in the correct drive selection, however I continue to be presented with the grey screen with the coloured
vertical lines nesesitating a dirty shutdown and restart also if I was still booting with the hdd, xp would start

Don't know why your getting the "grey screen with the coloured vertical lines" as Ubuntu is just a LiveCD.

I can only suggest that it is a computer prob as I have sucsessfully done two desktops with the same live cd
Thanks for your thoughts but I reckon I,m flogging a dead horse
I will attempt to contact asus see if I can get any response

Just a wild guess here but maybe your Live disk doesn't have a graphics driver that supports your card in the ASUS ?

Neon Jim
Thanks for thinking of me
I have just booted the laptop back into windows so ok there
Jim at this stage I,m tipping your "wild" guess could be on the money does that make it a dead issue?Huh?. Device manager tells me my display adaptor is a "ati radeon xpress 200m series"
and a driver update tells me I have the best driver not that it matters if the live cd does,nt have a driver.
Would it help you reckon if I asked on one of the ubuntu forums?Huh?

I would have thought it would have just used the default X.org Radeon driver.

No I disabled it, If you install VMware Fusion (costs money) or VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ (free) you can run the full version of Ubuntu on a virtual partition within Windows.

Have look this video, I'm running Mac OSX Lion with Parallels (VMWARE for Mac) plus I also have Windows XP, Windows 7 and Ubuntu all running at the same time.
