Are you absolutely sure you have a DVD drive in and not just a CD drive?

Have you tried different disks ?

Is it an IDE cable or Sata? If it's IDE make sure it's face the correct way, some lot IDE's are not key and can fit both ways.

Yes as Neon has said ... and if it is IDE and has 2 drives on the ribbon cable make sure one is set as 'master' and other is set as 'slave' ....

For What it is worth.....
I had exactly the same problem with a new HP laptop running Win7 Home Premium.
HP fix was as per attached registry edit.
NOTE; This was for Win 7.

Hi
Thanks for replying
The bios and device manager both report the drive as being present I assume ruling out a incorrect connection
Both are reporting a DVD drive
Drive is set as master on a single connection ribbon IDE cable connected to the mobo along side the hard drive (the simplest of setups)
The ribbon and the drive its, self are keyed
Is it possible there is a motherboard failure causing the dvd drive to be recognised but fail to read any media
I an reluctant to fiddle with the registry but if I have to so be it
any more thoughts

Try uninstalling the driver for the DVD Drive via the Device Manager then reboot, the driver should be reinstall automatically.

If you try the drive in another machine ( probably work fine ) then that rules out the drive ...

Maybe try a repair install of XP and then see how it goes as it might be something corrupt in the system files ...

If that fails then it points to the hardware ( Motherboard ) .....  In which case, if you weren't looking at a big job, then get a DVD drive working on that machine you may have to buy a USB external DVD drive ...

Jimbob
Ta mate
You have confirmed my suspisions Huh?
The replacement drive came from a working machine and the original drive "just stopped working"
Its a second hand machine (widescreen 19"monitor mouse keyboard tower)  $100.00 for mrs mike01 and not worth investing too much money on
as the monitor suddenly goes flickering pink every so often,as well, could be monitor or onboard video
all of which points to mobo probs
Thanks to all who have tried to assist but I reckon the machine is broke somewhere
leave it with me guys. Jims right if I was to get another usb dvd drive it would prove a point.  Thanks again for your assistance
Mike
Ps she is still playing her games I just cant load any more
Hang on I can probably download the install files to a thumb drive and still do it LOL FUN AINT IT
