I am reporting a strange occurrence on Google Maps and Google Earth.
I live in the Blue Mountains in NSW and was trying to find, for the benefit of an overseas friend, the distance between my home (Leura) and a locality a little further west (Hartley).
Using Google Maps (Au), I put both localities into the Directions slots, "A" for Leura, "B" for Hartley. The Map returned a route that took me away from the intended target, along the Great Western Highway, across country to Richmond, then returning along Bells Line of Road, across through Mt. Victoria and eventually down to Hartley, a journey of about 132 kms with a travel time of 2 hr. 7 mins.
I then used Google Earth, with exactly the same result. So I went to Google Maps (UK) and got exactly the same  route and time.
Then I swapped origin and destination making the trip from Hartley to Leura. This time I got the correct route with a distance of 29.4 kms and 31 mins. travel time.
I have reported it to Google but I have never found this problem before. I thought I might have a virus but a scan said no problems.
Intriguing  Huh? I wondered if anyone else had encountered a similar problem?

I too get the run-a round using the Leura-Hartley.

And the correct answer with Hartley-Leura. Grin

The only thing I can think of is "Google" likes things in alphabetical order!! Huh?

Thanks to each of you for your replies. As a matter of interest, Jimbob, I tried your "alternative" (Travelmate) suggestion using my Leura to Hartley journey and came up with exactly the same route as I had with Google. Then I noticed that the map Travelmate produced was a Google map!
Your result, Oldyella, was the same as mine for the Hartley to Leura run but, did you try the Leura to Hartley trip?
Dayko, I wondered if Google worked on the "anti-clockwise" principle. Google showed Leura to Hartley as an ACW trip. Hartley to Leura is also an ACW journey.  Huh?

I have also just tried "Whereis" and "Yahoo" maps, both of which gave me the "correct" result, i.e. the shortest route from Leura to Hartley. There were some minor differences in the route length (29.2, 28.89 kms).

That probably wouldn't be a big problem unless you were walking

Jimbob,

A LONG (long) time ago, in my youth, I thought nothing of walking that far. These days, the thought of walking anywhere fills me with dread!  Sad
