Hi,

Can somebody help with this?

Every time I open Word this line appears at the top of the page -

WeghhWRRFCtybbbbbDFFGH2345677883345533331122!!!!!!!!

I suspect it's somehow been added as a template or something but i can't find it anywhere to delete (except on the Word page).

I even re-installed Office but the corruption remained!!

Help!!

Regards,

TB

When you start Word, it loads a file called Normal.dot, the normal startup template. Yours has either become slightly corrupted, or somehow you have saved some random typing over the top of the file.

Go find it in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office (or run a search for "Normal.dot") and delete it.

When next you start Word a clean copy will be recreated.

Thanks Tassie, tried that! I found the Normal.dot template and was expecting to see that nuisance stuff in it but there was nothing to delete. Surely I shouldn't delete the Normal.dot template!

Yes delete then shut down Word and then restart it, it will create a new Normal.dot

Thanks neonwizard,

Sorry to be a pain but I am only able to locate the Normal.dot template from the Templates and add-ins on the Tools menu and it wouldn't allow me to delete it. I couldn't find it in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office or using Search.

What am I doing wrong? Could you possibly give more details?

Thanks,
TB

You might have to enable "Show Hidden Files and Folders"

So how do you delete the Normal.dot file.  Here are some simple steps to deleting it.

1.  Double click on My Computer.

2.  Click on the Tools menu in the top menu bar.

3.  Click on Folder Options...

4.  Click on the View Tab

5.  Click on the little button next to "Show hidden files and folders" (in the Advanced Settings box)

6.  Click OK.

7.  Double click on Local Disk (C:)

8.  Double click on the Documents and Settings folder

9.  Double click on the folder with your user name

10.  Double click on Application Data. (That folder will be dimmed)

11.  Double click on the Microsoft folder.

12.  Double click on the Templates folder.

13.  Right click on the Normal.dot file and delete it

14.  Now you need to hide your hidden folders again

15.  Click on the Tools menu in the top menu bar.

16.  Click on Folder Options...

17.  Click on the View tab.

18.  Click on the little button next to "Do not show hidden files and folders" (in the Advanced Settings box)

19.  Click on OK.

20.  Close all the open windows and you are done!

That's it when you start Word again, you will have a new blank document - a new Normal.dot.
