Windows updates problem
«
on:
December 14, 2011, 05:03:45 AM »
I was offered some updates on my Vista machine and got the usual message to restart the PC.
For the last 2 hours I have had the message
Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER
There's a little circle going round beside it.
What shall I do please?

Try this fix from Microsoft Support:
Click Start type cmd.exe as administrator (right-click and select run as administrator)
at the command prompt type
net stop wuauclt
net stop bits
You will see the services stop.
delete the folder c:\windows\softwaredistribution (you can rename it if you
want). Then start the services:
net start wuauclt
net start bits
then try again and see if it works.

Thanks neonwizard but I haven't got Start or a cursor or anything - just the screen I described above.
I think I am going to have to turn it off?

You may need to do this first:
How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature
To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:
Start your computer.
When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Thanks neonwizard
I said I had no Start or cursor only a message for the last two hours
Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER
I then said I think I shall have to turn it off?
I have just turned it off and it is fine.
