I am having a problem with Windows Media Player.
I have Windows 7 64 bit with WMP being an intrinsic part of the OS and seemingly uninstallable. The problem is that I have a collection of ripped audio CDs that play on my old computer running Vista  but will not play on the W7 computer. Windows says they are blank discs. And indeed Explorer says the discs are blank. On the Vista m/c the tracks show as .cda.  WMP is the default program for .cda on the Windows 7 m/c and yet they will not play.
Any thoughts?

I would be instaling VLC player .... it will load all the codecs you need for playing all sorts of files ... you can associate those files back then to Windows Media Player because you have the GODEC ...your choice.

I have tried using VLC media player but they won’t work there either and I get this message
“Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda://E:\'. Check the log for details.” (Wherever that maybe!)
Interestingly if I play the cds on my old Vista m/c and rip them to the library and copy that to a usb stick then put the usb stick into the W7 computer and copy that to the library it works ,they play( as .wma files) It a long way round but it works, but I really would like to know why they won't play on their own.

Windows says they are blank discs

Looks like your cd reader/writer is not compatible with the old one, and will not read the CDs.

Yes I think you are right. It seems as if the “new “ drive will only read Redbook cds.
I ripped a redbook cd on the old  m/c and burnt it to disc with .wma format. The new m/c wouldn’t even play that, saying the disc was blank.

The driver is up to date according to Windows so, am I stuck with this or is there a workaround somewhere out there?
Thanks for your input

You will need to upgrade the Firmware for that player / device ...

Look in your device manager and get the name and model of the drive and get the right firmware for it...

Thank you Jimbob I somehow expected I would have to do something like that.. The problem has escalated somewhat in that I now find  it won’t play some DVDs.
I have googled the device’s name and tried to follow the threads on some sites but it all seems a bit much for my aged brain.
It is an Asus laptop and it seems it has happened quite a lot. I think I’ll  ring Asus tomorrow ,maybe they can help.
Thanks for your input.
