Check your Security Tab in your Mail Handler, take the Tick out of " Do not allow Attachments to be saved or opened............."

Flower, are you running Ms.Outlook as your Mail Handler, try forwarding the Email with Attachment to Outlook Express, you should be able to open it there.
If not,
"Save As" the Email with the Attachment, to My Documents, and open it in Internet Explorer, "or" clicking it with left mouse to highlight it, then while holding down the shift key clicking on it with the right mouse button, the dialogue box will pop up and ask you what program you want to use to open the attachment. Choose whatever word processor you are using (not Note Pad or Word Pad). The attachment will then open in your word processor, and you should be able to read it.

PS
Just a thought have you downloaded and installed the latest Windows/Office Updates?

If your running Ms.Outlook have a look here

Checked that Jutta, I am up to date with them.  Would it be in order to do a restore? or would that take the problem back with it?

Flower which Mail Handler are you using Ms.Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.

Have you tried any of my above Suggestions to open the Attachments?

If you can not open the Attachments, I doubt very much that a System Restore would help!

Hi flower,
I wonder if these Word documents being emailed to you are done in the new Word 2007.
I found this information when I went to the Microsoft site that you may find useful - seems you need to download a 'Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office'.

Open a Word 2007 document in an earlier version of Word

To open Microsoft Office Word 2007 .docx or .docm files with Microsoft Office Word 2003, Word 2002, or Word 2000, you need to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats and any necessary Office updates. By using the Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system, you can open, edit some items, and save Office Word 2007 documents in previous versions of Word.

I can't see anything wrong with this
In fact I NEVER EVER open an attachment without first saving it to my desk top and scanning it. No matter where it comes from or how many clean attachments I had from this source already.

That is very wise nell again.  I was just curious, as to why the problem started all of a sudden.
