Vista Non-compatibility

I am in the market for a laptop and don't really want Vista but, this week Aldi have a Medion notebook computer deal coming out that I think is too good to pass up. My current desktop is a Medion with XP and it has been absolutely brilliant in the 5 years I've had it. Trouble is the O/S on the notebook is Vista Home Premium and, as I have said elsewhere in these forums, I don't want to have to spend a fortune to replace my old program disks just to suit Microsoft and it's 'aging' philosophy. Does anyone know of a site that can tell me what programs WON'T run under Vista, or do I simply assume nothing over 6 months old will work? I suppose I could always reformat and install XP instead (if I can buy a disk). I rang Microsoft to see if they could help with compatibility issues and where to buy an XP disk, but they were less use than an ashtray on a motorbike.

Whatever would we do without people like Neonwizard. Thank you, Neon, (even before I have read the links) It is marvellous to be able to access the wealth of information available through this forum.
