I have to turn the power off and then on again at the power point before my computer will boot. If  i just switch the computer on it will turn on but go no further. Black screen no writing on screen zilch. You can hear it going but that is it.  It was working fine bit this would occur once and a while previously. XP is my operating system.

6 years is getting on for a computer ... I think you might have hardware problems such as a monitor or power-supply just gradually fading out.

You mentioned the problem is becoming more frequent.  I would backup your files now so as to not loose data you wish to save and then maybe look to upgrade of get a new computer.
