My index and middle fingers are painful

and I tend to blame the mouse for my malaise. Have been looking at ergonomic mouses on the net but can't believe they would make any difference. Has anyone had any experience with stiff and painful fingers and or different mouses? Would love to have your opinions.

I use to but corrected my posture and hand position buy dropping down my computer chair until my forearm was level to the mouse, no more hand, wrist or shoulder pain and I'm on the computer all day everyday. I not saying this will help you as it did me but it gives you something to try.

Yeah nell-again, I can sympathise with you, but I don't think it is our Mouse but our "AGE", sometimes even the Elbow hurts, especially before the Weather changes!
I really envy People who started on Computers early enough to remember all the Shortcuts, hence very little use of the Mouse.
Alas, my remembering Shortcuts, bar a few is impossible

Have taken Neons Advise and lowered my Chair to change the Position of my Arm/Hand on the Mouse, I can not get the Chair down low enough, but even lowering the Chair a little bit, made a Difference already.
Will get my H\B to look into it, he is pretty handy with a Chainsaw, if all else fails.

Oldyellas Mouse looks great, but do not like the Idea of having to have 2 Mices!

I believe your hint has a lot of merit.
It's only about the last 3 or 4 months that I started using the mouse on my desktop. Before I worked the mouse from my draw-out shelf where my wrist and elbow are in horizontal alignment. I have now gone back to the shelf position but expect nothing much to happen for quite some time. My condition is acute and I'm trying to work with my left hand - fat old luck about that so far.

I concede my age to be a contributing factor, although a minor one. When I was on holidays for 2 weeks last month and only used my laptop to stay in touch with mail my fingers were doing OK.

Thank you oldyella for the lead. I actually thought to use my laptop only for a few weeks using the touchpad instead of a mouse. I shall think about your hint a bit more and also inquire whether their pad comes in a cordless version.

I will report back if I succeed to get this problem fixed but in fairness I will have to give it some time.

Hi Nell

I am in a Seniors Computer Club and we have a Logitech 2BUTTON USB/PS2 Marble Mouse Trackball for those that have difficulty with an ordinary mouse.

It does not need a mouse pad. It can be used in a small area on desk or sit back in a comfy chair and surf the net.

I had problems with pain in one shoulder.   I worked out what position i was in that gave me pain and trained myself into new habits.   I also take a 5 minute rest away from the computer every hour.  I think Neon has the right idea - if your posture is incorrect changing the mouse is not going to help.   

The pain went and never came back.

And not everything is age related - i am 70!!

for your interest but I fear the mouse isn't going to do the trick. I self-diagnosed myself to be suffering from Repetitive Stain Injury - RSI. What I need to do is to give my fingers a rest or use them in different ways.
Neon and youngster Alan-LB (thank you) seem to be on the right track. I already took their advice and hope time will heal.

Hi Nell again.  I've been there too.  The ergonomic mouse with the track ball is excellent.  I used one for a long time.  I also have the mouse pad with the gel  bit in the front to rest the base of the hand on it.  I've also been known to use an elastic fingerless glove like you can use for overdoing the craft. Sometimes I have even rested my elbow on the arm of my chair.  So there are several things you need to check on the way you sit and use the mouse.  Also there's nothing like the old Glucosamine and fish oil!!  So the aches come and go but we late middle aged people need to get cunning so we can work our way around these uncomfortable inconveniences and still enjoy our computing.  If the worst comes, just try to pace yourself and do say 20 minutes at a time and then go and do something boring to give your arm a rest before you get back into it.  Hang in there!!!
