Has anyone in this forum played with or been regularly using Linux as their operating system?  I have recently acquired disks for Ubuntu and Edubuntu.  These evidently can be run on the computer without being installed.  It seems like an interesting concept, not being tied to Microsoft...  It is also supposed to work much faster than Windows and has thousands of free programs.  I was also given a program called PING with which I could make a ghost of my C: drive and save it on the D: drive!

there are versions of linux that can be run without installing.
These are called live distributions. (not sure if ubuntu has a live disc)

otherwise the others can be virtually "installed" through programs like vm ware.

It can be faster than windows and yes has thousands of free programs, BUT. many of the commercial programs you have will not run on linux.

I've used Ubuntu on and off but not as a day to day OS I think it still has away to go before most Windows users feel comfortable with it.

Ubuntu does have a LiveCD and it is the best way to test it out.

The best scenario is having a old computer and installing one of the distributions on it.
