Have for some years used Norton AV & firewall (Norton Internet Security) but am due to renew in two weeks and I think it's time I changed to another program but what Huh?
I read so much about Norton being a pain to remove and it being an over bloated program but am not sure how I should proceed.
Could the experts please recommend a replacement.
I'm not sure if a free download is the best way to go or if I should purchase a retail AV & firewall. I don't want my system (and data files) to be at risk so I need suggestions. I'm not all that competent on the computer which is why I require assistance with a big change like this.

I have downloaded Avast & Comodo into a folder but haven't installed them yet as I am uncertain of how to proceed to get rid of Norton.
Do I unistal Norton from Control Panel Add/Remove THEN download the Norton removal tool or do I just download the removal tool and let that get rid of all the Norton files?
Once Norton is gone I guess I immediately instal the two new programmes.
This is all new to me as I have only ever had Norton on my computer and don't want to leave myself open to invasion.

Disconnect from your modem first, then use add and remove to remove Norton (You may have to reboot I not sure) then run the removal tool to get anything thats left.

Install Avast! (You may have to reboot) but don't update the definition yet. Install Comodo then reboot, while the computer is rebooting reconnect your modem then you can update the definition.

Thanks Neonwizard for the correct steps to follow.
I would not have thought to disconnect modem so you were a great help.

I have successfully got rid of Norton & installed Avast & Comodo as per Neonwizards instructions.
Avast scan picked up two problems from old Norton 2005 Internet Security (they must have been sitting in quarantine all this time !!) Keygen SSG exe  Win32:Delf-FPA (TRJ)
I selected to Move to chest but I cannot find out how to get rid of them.
I right clicked the Avast icon but all it told me was how much room is used by the chest, so what do I do now ?

To empty the chest right click on the avast icon and select Start Avast Antivirus, when it starts it will scan a memory test and then open, once opened you can open the virus chest via the 3rd button from the left hand bottom of the screen. Highlight the file to remove and select delete.
